Building a home is a labor of love for many homeowners. If you have been renting for a significant period of time, you understand the excitement that surrounds the first home that you can really call your own. You have likely carefully planned the architectural design and structure of the home. However, as it starts to take shape, you need to turn your attention to a few of the most important areas in your house: the kitchen and bathrooms. These can easily be said to be the most used and abused parts of your home, so the products that you choose are very important.

The kitchen is considered to be the heart of a home. Not only are the daily meals prepared in this area, but it is also where both family and friends gather for entertaining and togetherness. Before you make your final selections, it's important to create an overview of the look that you are trying to create. You will need to look at each part of the puzzle in relation to the desired finished product. Is your ambiance best served by a glass countertops, or is a quartz countertop more suitable? Kitchen backsplash tile is also an important part of the process, as it can serve as either a focal point or blend in with the rest of your kitchen design. Finally, the styling and placement of your kitchen sinks is important. You may be going for a cleaner look and want to consider stainless steel kitchen sinks. For a more traditional or old world design, porcelain may be a better choice for the sinks.

When it comes to your bathrooms, functionality is the most important thing. Obviously, everything needs to be convenient and function well. However, things like bathroom floor tile can make a difference in the overall appearance and feel of the room. Ceramic and porcelain floor tiles are common choices for bathroom floors. You will also want to pay attention to bathroom vanity cabinets, as even the smallest area needs an accessible storage space. Finally, in your master bathroom, all stops are pulled out. This will be your personal sanctuary, so a bigger part of your budget should be allotted for this project. Using a glass block shower is a common choice for master baths. You can then focus on a nicer tub for relaxing. Jetted tubs are extremely common in master baths. You can also add classic appeal by using cast iron bathtubs. Be sure to keep things balanced so that your finished product remains warm and inviting.

Seeing the finishing touches applied to your first home is a surreal experience. You have likely planned and saved for this day for quite a few years. Because they are the most used areas of a home, you should give plenty of thought to the design and layout of the kitchen and baths. While getting it right may take a bit more time, you'll never regret it once you move in.

Same here. I would love to replace my ugly kitchen floor with some nice tiles. They make cleanup so much easier. Now I just have to figure out what kind of tiles to get. Does anybody have suggestions? Thanks.

I hate my kitchen and am looking for ideas to update it. I really like the glass countertops, especially the recycled ones. I have to think of some way to use those glass blocks in my kitchen too!
